Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC) recognises the importance of carbon management to counter the climate change implications of the world’s increasing energy use. “We remain steadfast in exploring various measures to reduce carbon emissions and their impact on the environment,” said BGC Managing Director Captain Abdul Mateen Abdurrahman Liew.
He said this at the company’s 25th anniversary celebration at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall, The Empire Brunei yesterday.
Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah and Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha attended as guests of honour.
Captain Abdul Mateen lauded BGC’s 25-year history in shipping and maritime, shouldering the responsibility of delivering the Sultanate’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes to customers around the world.
He also reflected on BGC’s commitment in continuing to fuel the maritime talent pipeline for Brunei, working collaboratively with other organisations within the sector to produce highly skilled and capable individuals in line with Brunei Vision 2035.
BGC, he said, “aims to replicate its success in other fields and aspire to develop and expand its services beyond the delivery of LNG.
“Brunei LNG has been a vital force in contributing to the nation’s economic growth and BGC takes pride in fulfilling its duty with a track record of not missing a single delivery since its operations 25 years ago.
“While safety is and will always be at the core of every aspect of their work in ensuring everyone goes home safely, BGC’s operational excellence meanwhile is an essential foundation of its business model, which they have continued to meet the highest standards the last 25 years”.
The managing director also expressed pride on how far they have come and setting new precedents along the way. “These feats are a testament to the level of impact that BGC can have on the nation, supporting the wider national agenda especially in manpower development, diversification, and supporting the hydrocarbon value chain.”
Captain Abdul Mateen noted that the technological advancements also play a key role in business sustainability through increasing productivity and output, reducing environmental impact, and transforming the way they work. He said it cannot be denied that the century’s technological change has been exponential and it will continue to evolve at a rapid rate, requiring businesses to adapt accordingly.
In recognition of this, BGC established their own Digitalisation Transformation Roadmap to Support the change. The event proceeded with the fourth instalment of the Maritime Talent Pipeline Achievements Ceremony (MTPAC), starting with the promotion to rank of BGC ship officers followed by the signing of contracts for BGC scholars.
A signing ceremony of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) was held between BGC and Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd to support the running of navigational courses, and MISC Maritime Services Sdn Bhd (Malaysia) to support capacity building, and the exploration of other opportunities such as marine services also took place.
The ministers also officiated the launch of BGC’s 25th Anniversary Coffee Table Book, capturing BGC’s 25-year journey in shipping and maritime, which began from its establishment in 1998.
BGC also unveiled a timeline tunnel showcasing its 25-year history, followed by a guided tour of a commemorative gallery filled with interactive displays including innovations, staff talent and achievements, social investment initiatives and the launch of BGC’s Fleet Port System.
The gallery was envisioned to be a museum-like exhibition in the form of a 20-foot BGC A-Class vessel replica. – Lyna Mohamad
