To ensure that at completion of the Course the candidate will meet the minimum standard of competence in order to undertake duties on tankers in accordance with Regulation V/I paragraph 1.2 of STCW 1995.

Participants will be educated on safe handling of tanker cargoes including those of a dangerous, hazardous and/or harmful nature and their effect upon the safety of both the ship and life on board it. This would require the understanding of the usage of Cargo Safety Date Sheets as well as the methods of controlling hazards on tankers.

Participants will also be educated on the basic working knowledge of relevant IMO conventions applicable to tankers concerning safety at sea; this includes the development of tankers and the types of cargoes as well as tanker terminology and tanker rules and regulations. Participants will also be trained to operate cargo pumping systems and associated control systems; this includes general cargo handling equipment onboard oil, chemical and liquefied gas tankers as well as a general awareness of safe cargo operational procedures on tankers.
